For Counselors
A free resource counselors can share with students and families.
Choosing a college involves many factors. Academic fit, campus environment, distance from home, program availability, and eventually the financial commitment each option carries. Understanding the financial commitment is one important part of a much larger conversation, and for many families it's the part that's hardest to picture.
CollegeClearly is a free educational resource that helps families better understand the financial commitment behind a college decision. A calculator at the center of the site translates college borrowing into an estimated monthly loan payment. Supporting articles, guides, and reference resources help families understand what the numbers mean, where they come from, and what they will require over time.
CollegeClearly isn't intended to replace counseling conversations. It's designed to support them by giving families a simple resource they can revisit on their own.
No account required. No personal information collected. The resource is free for students and families to use at any point in the college decision process.
How counselors are using CollegeClearly
Counselors have told us they find CollegeClearly helpful in situations like these:
- During a one-on-one conversation when a student is weighing two or more college offers
- When a student or parent asks what borrowing for a particular school would actually look like after graduation
- As a resource to share after a meeting, giving families a way to revisit the financial part of the conversation on their own
- When students are comparing in-state and out-of-state options where the difference in borrowing may not be immediately obvious
- As part of a FAFSA Night, financial aid presentation, or college planning workshop to help families connect borrowing with estimated monthly payments
- On a college counseling or college planning resources page, alongside other trusted resources families can return to during the decision process
A note on what CollegeClearly doesn't do
CollegeClearly doesn't recommend schools, lenders, or financial products. It doesn't offer financial advice, and it doesn't tell students how much they should borrow. It produces an estimate and lets the student and their family decide what it means for them.
It's also free and completely independent. CollegeClearly doesn't receive referral fees or commissions from any party with a financial stake in a student's borrowing decision.
What counselors have told us
The use cases on this page reflect conversations with practicing counselors, not hypothetical scenarios.
Counselors have told us that families often struggle to understand and compare the financial commitment behind different college options. A sticker price is one number families can see. A financial aid offer brings more numbers, often harder to translate. And what borrowing will actually mean over time, in a monthly budget, rarely arrives in a form families can picture.
Several counselors have described CollegeClearly as a helpful way to make that part of the decision more tangible. Translating borrowing into an estimated monthly loan payment gives families something concrete to work with. Others have said they would share the tool after a conversation, as a resource families can return to on their own time.
That feedback continues to shape how CollegeClearly is built and refined.
